US Supreme Court Justice Alito stands firm on Trump cases despite flags controversy

US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has refused to remove himself from important election-year cases despite controversy over flags displayed outside his homes. The flags, an upside-down US flag and a pine tree flag known as the 'Appeal to Heaven', were flown by his wife.

The upside-down flag was raised after a dispute with neighbors in January 2021, while the pine tree flag was part of a collection of historical and themed flags put up by his wife at their holiday home. Justice Alito maintains that these flags do not affect his impartiality in cases involving Donald Trump or the Capitol rioters.

US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has refused to bow to political pressure and remove himself from important election-year cases following a controversy over flags displayed outside his homes. The flags in question, an upside-down US flag and a pine tree flag known as the 'Appeal to Heaven', were flown by his wife.

These flags were seen outside their suburban Virginia home and holiday home in New Jersey. Although both flags were carried by some Donald Trump supporters during the Capitol riots, Justice Alito emphasized that this did not affect his impartiality in cases involving Trump or the rioters. He clarified that his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, had raised the upside-down US flag after a dispute with neighbors in January 2021 and that he was unaware of it until it was brought to his attention. Despite immediately asking his wife to take it down, she initially refused for several days.
